Message	but I'm pretty sure you can put it on there whenever you want. If you're going to try without the pliers, probably better to try it while it's out. Neither I nor the very large guy who was present could get that darn thing on, even trying together. We installed the shifter without it; he figured he'd go pick up the pliers another day and finish it then. I have no idea how that turned out.
